Luigi Bosca: A Century of Passion and Precision in Argentine Wine

For over 120 years, Luigi Bosca has been one of the most emblematic names in Argentine wine. The winery was founded in 1901 in Luján de Cuyo by Spanish immigrant Leoncio Arizu. It's recognized as Argentina’s first boutique winery and is home to the oldest winemaking family in Mendoza.

The winery has maintained its philosophy through four generations, believing that only exceptional effort yields distinctive and memorable wines. Luigi Bosca has established itself as a benchmark in winemaking, utilizing precise techniques and profound vineyard expertise to blend traditional practices with modern innovation.

The brand’s concept, "Seize the Unexpected," embodies the family's optimism, expertise, and vision. Each wine balances elegance, precision, and a genuine expression of terroir.

A Family Legacy That Shaped Mendoza

The Arizu family played a pioneering role in shaping Mendoza’s global reputation. Their landmark achievement was the creation of the Luján de Cuyo Denomination of Origin (D.O.C.), the first Malbec-specific designation in Argentina and the Americas.

Since 1991, Ing. Alberto Arizu (Sr) has led the D.O.C. and represented Argentina in the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). His commitment to viticulture and land protection has set lasting standards for the wine industry.

Today, the fourth generation of the Arizu family continues to uphold values of authenticity, precision, and persistence, keeping Luigi Bosca’s legacy alive.

Vineyards at Altitude, Crafted by the Andes

Luigi Bosca’s quality begins in the vineyard. Mendoza’s high elevation brings intense sunlight and sharp temperature swings between hot days and cool nights. Combined with diverse alluvial soils, these conditions create ideal terroirs for wines of depth, elegance, and balance.

  • The Luján de Cuyo (900 to 1,100 meters) area is the birthplace of Malbec grapes. Its clay-loam and sandy-loam soils provide structure and ripeness. Notable sites include Finca Los Nobles in Vistalba and Las Compuertas, both located at elevations of 1,020-1,050 meters. These vineyards feature vines over 90 years old, producing complex wines.

  • The Uco Valley represents a new frontier for fine wine production, featuring shallow, stony soils with high levels of calcium carbonate. The area produces wines with marked mineral character and elevated acidity.

    • The Paraje Altamira vineyard, situated at 1,050 meters, is renowned for its calcareous soils and cool climate, which yield fresh and precise wines.

    • Gualtallary (1,150 to 1,200 m) offers wines with a taut structure and aromatic lift from its sunny, cool climate.

    • The valley gains its diversity from the unique fruit and spice characteristics of El Peral and Los Árboles.

  • Valle de Canota (950 to 1,200 meters): This pre-cordillera valley in Las Heras provides the perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The combination of clay, sand, and slate alluvial soils, along with sunny days and chilly nights, results in wines that deliver strong flavors with spicy notes and intricate complexities.

  • Maipú: Home to Finca El Paraíso, with vineyards at 720-780 meters. This historic estate is central to the winery's heritage and produces one of its most iconic wines.

Sustainability is at the heart of the Arizu family’s vision. Each vineyard is cultivated with respect for the environment, using practices that protect biodiversity and reduce water usage, ensuring these unique terroirs are preserved for generations to come.
